Why the Octopus?
When we think of the octopus, we think of our darling Asher (9/29/2019-11/23/2019). The namesake for this organization, Asher is the beloved son, grandson, and nephew of the Bossy Ricketts’ family. Asher was born premature in the fall of 2019. While Asher was in the NICU, the Bossy Ricketts learned about an organization that gifted premature infants small crocheted octopuses. A nurse explained that the stuffed animal’s tentacles mimicked the umbilical cord in the mother’s womb, and the infant could play with the tentacles as a way to self-soothe.
On Halloween, Elizabeth decided to create an octopus costume for Asher with crocheted tentacles that he could grasp in his tiny fingers. They celebrated their favorite holiday together in his under-the-sea decorated hospital room. The octopus has been a symbol for Asher ever since.
Octopuses are known for their intelligence and craftiness. In mythology, octopuses are heralded as mysterious, otherworldly, and eternal beings. The image of the octopus will always be a reminder of the transformative impact Asher had on us all.
